Holloway Place: Transforming Historic Durham into Affordable Housing

Housing For New Hope (HFNH), a Durham based non-profit affordable housing developer and service provider, had purchased a historic home in the heart of Durham that had been vacant and dilapidated for several decades. The house had terrible energy performance and an extensive amount of hazardous materials. HFNH desired to renovate the building so they could provide multiple units for women experiencing, or at risk, of homelessness while offering a live-in supportive service provider. In order to accomplish this vision, HFNH partnered with Haven who provided a clear process to success.

Haven’s Comprehensive Design-Build team worked with HFNH to create a feasibility study, concept design, and trustworthy concept estimate. Haven worked with HFNH to present this material to the city and funders to help get the money necessary to make the project a reality. Once funding was acquired, Haven’s unique design-build approach offered a clear plan to be able to finished the construction drawings and executed the construction to make it a reality.

The end result was the beautiful home you see below that offers 7 Single Room Occupancy units to the community while increasing the building’s energy performance and removing the hazardous material to improve human health outcomes. During construction, Haven prioritized local and historically underutilized business (HUB) subcontractors to complete the construction activities. As such, not only is the end use impacting the community, but the process of creating the space had equal impact.
